Our second request post is in response to a friend seeking a sweatshirt that would be fit to wear to the gym and then to the bar directly afterward. The requester and I got to talking about shawl collar sweatshirts, of which there are many kinds these days. With the fit and construction of sweatshirts getting the slim treatment in the past few years, there are many more flattering silhouettes out there for men, and with the flattering silhouettes come other tailored styles. Shawl collars have a refined air about them, which means the wearer looks more put together, whether at the gym, bar, or wherever.
1. Reigning Champ
If I need a fleece sweat item, I look to Reigning Champ. Their sweats are well made, have an attainable price point, and they come in a bunch of colors and fleece weights. They've got three shawl collar sweatshirts come in green, black, and this navy tiger fleece.
2. Homecore Paulo Shawl Collar Sweatshirt
If a less sporty option is preferred, Homecore's two-button caramel colored shawl collar sweatshirt may be right. It's an 80%/20% cotton/polyester blend and is impressively weighted – you're not getting a flimsy garment by any means. The two-button placket and corozo nut buttons are nice touches.
3. Todd Snyder x Champion Grey Heather Shawl Collar
Probably the most gym-ready of all these options, Todd Snyder's recent collaboration with Champion produced a bevy of sweats reminiscent of Champion's glory days. This two-tone shawl collar popover looks crazy soft, has a tubular hand warmer pocket in front, and a two-button throat closure.
4. Aspesi Two-Pocket Sweater
Aspesi's more subtle take on the shawl collar sweatshirt sees the addition of two chest pockets and a stand-up collar with four-button closure. It's tailored and may stand out at the gym for being less of a sweatshirt and more of a sweater. However, it's only cosmetic because the 100% cotton construction puts it definitively in sweatshirt territory.
5. Esemplare Reverse Seam Wool Sweater
For the last entry I wanted to pitch a curve ball in the way of a sweater that has a sweatshirt detailing and cut. Esemplare used washed virgin wool, reverse seam stitching, and raglan sleeves to give this sweater a more casual appearance and super soft hand. Shawl or not, this one is a refreshing take on the sweater/sweatshirt form.
